Work-stress, personality and coping

This survey was created by Katie, a final year undergraduate student at NTU.

I am a 3rd year Psychology student at Nottingham Trent University. I am currently carrying out a final year project into personality, coping and work-related stress. Most people have been affected by stress at one time or another; I am interested in the different ways in which people deal with stress at work.

Please continue with this survey only if you are at least 18 years of age, and you are currently employed by an organisation on a full-time or part-time basis.

The study will require you to complete a series of short, self-report questionnaires. Each questionnaire will have clear instructions which will explain what you will need to do. Please read these instructions carefully and take as long as you need for each part. The study will take on average around 15-20 minutes.

Please try to fill in the questionnaire as fully as possible; you have the right however not to answer any questions that you find offensive or intrusive. At the start of the survey you will be asked to provide a unique identifier (e.g. your pets name), you will not be asked for your name at any point in the questionnaire, so the write up of this investigation will remain fully confidential. Participation in this study is entirely voluntary, and you have the right to withdraw from this study at any time, during or after completion of the questionnaire.

No data will be stored until you select 'finished' at the bottom of the survey. If you decide that you wish to withdraw part-way through the survey, just close the browser and no data will have been stored. If you wish to withdraw your data after you have submitted the questionnaire, please make a note of your unique identitifier and email me stating that you wish to withdraw your data. No further analysis will then be carried out on your data. All data will be destroyed on completion of the study.

If you have any further questions regarding this study you can contact me at the following email address; N0021159@ntu.ac.uk, or my supervisor; Glenn.Williams@ntu.ac.uk.

By continuing you are confirming that you:

• Have read, and fully understood the above • Agree to voluntarily take part in the investigation • Are at least 18 years of age • Are currently employed

Please tick 'Yes' to confirm this or, if you wish to withdraw at this stage, please close the Browser.

Section B.

This questionnaire asks you to indicate what you generally do and feel when you experience stressful events. Obviously, different events bring out somewhat different responses, but think about what you usually do when you are under a lot of stress. Then respond to each of the following items by choosing one number for each, using the response choices listed just below:

1= I usually don’t do this at all. 2= I usually do this a little bit. 3= I usually do this a medium amount. 4= I usually do this a lot.

Please try to respond to each item separately in your mind from each other item. Choose your answers thoughtfully, and make your answers as true FOR YOU as you can. Please answer every item. There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers, so please indicate what YOU usually do when YOU experience a stressful event.

Section F.

The final part of the survey consists of 30 statements that describe work-related events. You will be asked to rate both the amount of stress associated with each event (part I), and then, the number of times within the last 6 months that you have experienced each event (part II).

The first event, ASSIGNMENT OF DISAGREEABLE DUTIES (e.g. being given an unpleasant job that you don’t want to do), has been given a rating of “5” and will be used as the STANDARD for evaluating the other events in the survey. Your task is to compare each event with the standard, and then assign a number “1” to “9” to indicate if you judge the event to be more or less stressful than being assigned disagreeable duties.

For those events that you feel are more stressful than the standard, select a number proportionately larger than “5”. If you feel an event is less stressful than the standard, select a number proportionately lower than “5”. For events judged to produce approximately the same amount of stress as the standard ASSIGNMENT OF DISAGREEABLE DUTIES, select the number “5”. Use the following scale to record your answers:

1= Low stress. 5= Moderate stress. 9= High Stress.

1. ASSIGNMENT OF DISAGREEABLE DUTIES (given a standard rating of '5')
